The Hawai'i Council for the Humanities is excited to announce an upcoming virtual teacher workshop in November: Women and the American Story. This engaging and illuminating workshop series, presented by The New York Historical Society, will provide teachers with primary sources and life stories that is critical in learning about how women were significant in shaping US History.

This workshop is organized by Hawaiʻi Council for the Humanities, Chaminade History Center, and New York Historical Society, and cosponsored by Hawaiʻi Catholic Schools, Hawaiʻi Association of Independent Schools, King Kamehameha V Judiciary History Center, League of Women Voters of Hawaiʻi County, and the University of HawaiʻiMānoa College of Education.

The New York Historical Society will present on two time periods:

  • "Settler Colonialism and the Revolution (1692-1783)" examines the lives of colonial women of different ethnicities including Black, White, and Native American.  It also looks at women from different geographic regions, such as Russian Alaska, Spanish California, French Louisiana, and England's 13 colonies.  The period also analyzes the different roles women played in the American Revolution.

  • "Confidence and Crises (1920-1948)"  In this period, women gained the vote, endured the Great Depression, took part in the Second World War, and witnessed the beginning of the Cold War. African American women lived under "Jim Crow" laws. Asian, Jewish, Italian, and East European women encountered racist immigration laws.  Rosie the Riveter was told to go home and start a family at the end of World War II.

In addition, NYHS will provide its wealth of historical resources including:

  • Free, open access, and easy to navigate web content.
  • Primary sources on women in American history
  • Life stories of women in history
