The public is welcomed to join the General Meeting of the Hawai`i County League of Women Voters on Saturday, January 10th, 2022, from 10 a.m. Guest speaker Dr. Larry Heintz will present on "An Ethicist's Take on the Hawaii County Board of Ethics." The event will be held via Zoom.

Dr. Heintz will discuss topics including:

  • Purpose, Structure & Actions (Petitions, Complaints, Advisory Opinions, Penalties)
  • The Code, Dramatic Cases & Issues (Mauna Kea Access Road, Failures to Disclose & Recusals)
  • The Sunshine Law - a help or a hindrance to good governance?

The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan political organization that encourages the informed and active participation of citizens in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy.

 

SPEAKER'S BIO

Dr. Heintz is an Emeritus Professor of Philosophy, University of Hawaii at Hilo. He received his Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of California, Santa Barbara, with a specialization in Ethical Theory. His dissertation was titled “Duty, Obligation and Moral Responsibility: a Commitment Theory of Obligation”. He taught Philosophy for 37 years in Universities in California, Oregon, & Hawaii. He conducted post-doctoral research in Ethics, Medicine and Law as it relates to issues of Death and Dying for one year each at Oxford University (1986-7), The Frei Universitet in Amsterdam (2001-2) and The University of Auckland in New Zealand (2010). He has published numerous articles in Journals in Philosophy and Health Care.

He served as “Philosopher in Residence” at Hilo Hospital in 1982-3 and founded the Hospital’s Ethics Committee in 1983. He was appointed to the Governor’s Blue Ribbon Panel on Living & Dying with Dignity (1996-8). He has served as consulting medical ethicist for 39 years for the State Department of Health and Hawaii Hospital Systems Corporation where he continues today. He was appointed to the Hawaii County Board of Ethics in 2019 by Mayor Harry Kim.
