Current, former, and prospective members as well as other interested persons are invited to join the League of Women Voters of Hawaii County  (LWVHC) to hear Doug Meller speak at the annual  meeting on Saturday, April 22.   It will be a hybrid meeting, with the meeting scheduled in person at the Unitarian Universalists of Puna, Hawaii Paradise Park.

The LWVHC meeting starts with registration at 9:45 a.m., with a welcome and call to order for the general meeting at 10:00 a.m. Mr. Doug Meller’s talk will follow a minimal amount of annual business.

Doug Meller’s presentation will address a topic that is at the core of LWV’s promotion of democracy: transparency in government. Specifically, Doug will touch upon some key aspects of the policy and legislative underpinnings of the state Sunshine Law and Uniform Practices Act, together with their actual implementation of challenges and shortcomings. Speaker bio below.

The hybrid meeting will be held both in-person and via Zoom.

Please arrive at the venue by 9:45 a.m. for registration. Directions:

  • Turn  makai  (toward the ocean)  on Paradise Drive from Hwy 130  (Kea`au to Pahoa).
  • Go down Paradise Drive till you reach 14th Ave.
  • Turn right.
  • Proceed to the Unitarian Universalists Fellowship House at 15-1791 14th Ave. across the street from the large orchid greenhouse.

SPEAKER BIO

Doug Meller was born and lived most of his life in Honolulu. He possesses a BS degree in Physics from the University of California at Riverside and an MA in Urban Planning from the University of Hawaii. Prior to his 2009 retirement, at various times he was employed by HDOT Highways Division, engineering consulting firms, city departments, legislators, UH, a non-profit environmental advocacy organization, and in his own words “(not voluntarily) by the U.S. Army.” Doug now spends his time “tilting at windmills, boogie boarding, growing orchids, and writing gonzo testimony for the LWV State Legislative Committee.”

The League of Women Voters does not support or oppose candidates or political parties. Instead, it works to encourage the informed and active participation of citizens in government. Membership in the LWV is open to all citizens of voting age; non-citizens and citizens not yet of voting age can be Associate Members.
