Location
Join us at the next general meeting of the League of Women Voters of Hawai`i County will be held in person and via Zoom on Saturday, August 17, from 10:00 a.m. (arrive by 9:50), at Unitarian Universalists of Puna in Hawaiian Paradise Park.
Keaʻau High School principal Dean Cevallos will be speaking on the school's experience with the state's new standards around civic education, including involvement with programs such as Kids Voting Hawai'i and Hawai'i History Day. Mr. Cevallos will also share his impressions of how young people view civic and political engagement, opportunities and challenges ahead, and how the broader community can support our young people and Kea'au High. His talk will be followed by Q&A with the audience.
We will also be recognizing the winner of the League of Women Voters of Hawai`i County's award for an outstanding project demonstrating civic engagement, advocacy or voter education in the strengthening of democracy and transparency at the 2024 Hawaiʻi History Day Hawaiʻi Island district competition. Cole Aragaki of Waiakea Intermediate School was selected for his junior division documentary, "Ma ke kai: William S. Richardson and the (Re)turn to Tradition." His teacher is Jonathan Peralto. We invite you to watch (and like!) his documentary before the meeting. Hawaiʻi History Day is a program of the Hawai`i Council for the Humanities.
