Join us at the next general meeting of the League of Women Voters of Hawai`i County will be held in person and via Zoom on Saturday, August 17, from 10:00 a.m. (arrive by 9:50), at Unitarian Universalists of Puna in Hawaiian Paradise Park.
Keaʻau High School principal Dean Cevallos will be speaking on the school's experience with the state's new standards around civic education, including involvement with programs such as Kids Voting Hawai'i and Hawai'i History Day. Mr. Cevallos will also share his impressions of how young people view civic and political engagement, opportunities and challenges ahead, and how the broader community can support our young people and Kea'au High. His talk will be followed by Q&A with the audience.
SPEAKER BIO
Dean Cevallos has been with the Hawaiʻi Department of Education for over 25 years, as a substitute teacher, part-time teacher, Special Education teacher, and finally administrator, at Pahoa High and Intermediate, Hilo High, and Keaʻau High. As principal of Keaʻau High since 2011, he has implemented numerous programs to improve performance. In 2015, he was awarded the Masayuki Tokioka Excellence in School Leadership Award from the Island Insurance Foundation, which is given annually to a public school principal who is visionary and community minded, and who has an entrepreneurial spirit. His past experience includes being raised in Aurora, Colorado, and working for the Rocky Mountain Newspaper, the Navy, and the Post Office, and as a dendrobium farmer and a consultant.
