Currently, as of February 2021, fifteen residents of rural subdivisions on Hawaii Island have been interviewed. They are from Orchidland, Fern Forest, Fern Acres, Hawaii Ocean View Rancho Estates, Hawaiian Acres, Ainaloa, Hawaiian Terrace, and Hawaiian Orchid Isle Estates.
The commonest themes of malfunction obtained from those interviewed so far:
- President of Board taking action without board approval
- Board members hiring workers bypassing bylaws rules
- Board not appointing committees as specified in bylaws
- Board officers withholding documents such as audits from other board members and residents
- Adding new members to board or election ballot without following bylaws
- Board members taking action without a quorum.
- Not putting work out to bid as specified in bylaws
- Claims of harassment from board members when asked clarifying questions by residents or homeowners
- Misuse of road funds
- Obtaining TROs on other subdivision board members or residents.
- Bringing lawsuits against other board members.
There are several other residents of rural subdivisions on a list to be interviewed as soon as it is possible to do so considering Covid 19 restrictions. If LWV-HC members have interviewees to suggest, especially from subdivisions where no one has yet been interviewed, or if someone desires to do an interview themselves, please contact Margaret Drake at lwvhawaiicty [at] gmail.com .
