TWELVE WOMEN TO BE HONORED ON WOMEN’S EQUALITY DAY

The community will honor twelve area women on Women’s Equality Day, August 26, 2018 from 2:00pm to 4:00pm, with the 2018 Celebrating Michiana Women Leaders exhibit. The event will take place at the Indiana University South Bend Civil Rights Heritage Center, 1040 West Washington Street, in South Bend. A short program will begin at 2:15pm. The event is free and all are welcome.

The exhibit will feature a portrait of each honoree and a companion booklet containing brief historical narratives taken from personal interviews and/or historical records. The honorees or a representative will be introduced during the short program. The 2018 honorees are Nanci Flores, Diana Hess, Penny Hughes, Jeanne M. Jourdan, Jann Joseph, Julia Nabaa, Kathy Schuth, Blaire Topash-Caldwell, Regina Williams-Preston, Maritza Robles, Albertina Wassenhove, and Linda Wolfson.

The exhibit is a partnership of The Michiana Women Leaders Project, the League of Women Voters of the South Bend Area, and the Indiana University South Bend Civil Rights Heritage Center, with support from these community sponsors: Four Winds Casino; YWCA North Central Indiana; The South Bend Chapter of The Links, Inc.; the Community Forum for Economic Justice; Gender Studies, University of Notre Dame; Saint Margaret’s House; La Casa de Amistad; South Bend Human Rights Commission, Women’s Concerns Committee; AAUW; Islamic Society; The LGBTQ Center; and OMG Photography.

This annual educational exhibit celebrates women who have blazed new trails, have been relentless advocates, have guided the community through change, have supported the arts and other cultural assets, or have dedicated their lives to caring for or educating others. The exhibit highlights both women whose leadership is widely recognized and those who lead quietly behind the scenes, perhaps not known by the community at large.

About the Partners:
League of Women Voters: The League of Women Voters is a political organization encouraging the informed and active participation of citizens in government. It influences public policy through education and advocacy and does not support or oppose any political party or candidate. Membership is open to women and men. For more, visit www.lwvsouthbend.org
The Michiana Women Leaders Project: Despite the myriad ways that women’s leadership has contributed to society as we know it today, including in the Michiana area, very little about their contributions has been documented or recorded. The Michiana Women Leaders Project is an ongoing initiative to collect and document the contributions of women leaders through their oral histories.
Indiana University South Bend Civil Rights Heritage Center: Born from the efforts of Indiana University South Bend students and professors, the Civil Rights Heritage Center transformed a once segregated city swimming pool into an active learning center. It explores the civil rights struggles of the past so people can take action in the present and build a better future. For more, visit http://www.crhc.iusb.edu/
