Medical debt ruins lives in our community. Together, we can address this issue by providing short-term debt relief and working toward a future where healthcare is a human right, not a commodity.

Please join us on the evening of Tuesday, July 29th, from 6:00-9:00 at Small Craft, 101 Navy St. in Hancock. Enjoy music, food, and hope – every dollar brings relief. 100% of your tax-deductible donation goes towards eliminating undue medical debt in our community.

This initiative was created by Keweenaw Indivisible with the goal of raising $15,000.  This amount would remove medical debt in the UP!  The easiest way to donate is through their unique website created by the Undue Medical Debt organization just for this event: Undue Medical Debt

P.S.  For more information, the site can answer your questions, such as:

How Undue Works.

Who qualifies for medical debt relief?

We provide debt relief based on financial need. To qualify, an individual must either:

  • Earn at or below 400% of the federal poverty level
  • Have medical debt that exceeds 5% of their income

These criteria are built into our system and apply to all debt we purchase. We do not collect or require information about immigration status. We also cannot target relief based on medical condition, age, or other personal characteristics.  We never collect on the debt we purchase, only relieve it.

 1. You make a tax-deductible donation.

Undue uses data analytics to pinpoint the debt of those most in need: households that earn less than 4x the federal poverty level (varies by state and family size) or whose debts are 5% or more of annual income.

 2. Undue buys medical debt at a steep discount.

We buy debt in bundles, millions of dollars at a time, at a fraction of the original cost. This means your donation relieves approximately 100 times its value in medical debt.

 3. Together, we wipe out medical debt.

People across the country receive letters stating that their debt has been erased. They have no tax consequences or penalties to consider. Just like that, they’re free of medical debt.
