In 1971 the voting ages was lowered to 18. 50% of 18-24 years olds voted that next year. Fast forward to 2016…only 39% of 18-24 year olds voted while 70% of people over 60 years old voted. Why aren’t young people voting? Your voice matters – so make it count. It’s not just about who you want for president, it’s also about the issues you care about at the state and local level.

Too many voters spend little or no time evaluating candidates for local offices such as mayor, city council and school board, ignoring the fact that these folks will have more immediate and greater impact on our lives than candidates we send to Sacramento or Washington DC.  

Here are a few suggestions for evaluating these candidates:

The Portage Lake District Library hosted speakers from The League of Women Voters of the Copper Country in a zoom forum on mail-in voting. Topics will include reasons you can have confidence in mail-in voting, advantages, and how-to information on obtaining and tracking your ballot.

Do you have questions about registration deadlines, when to mail in absentee ballots, what safety precautions will be taken at the polls, or where to go to find accurate information about local issues and elections? Laura Smits, Vice President of Voter Services for the state, will provide a presentation on these and other voting issues, and answer questions from the attendees. Irene Weiss, President of Voter Services for the Southeastern CT chapter of the LWV, will also be present to talk about local issues, voter registration initiatives, and how to get involved.
