More than 100 years ago, the League of Women Voters of the US was founded to be a nonpartisan voice for American women who wanted free, fair, and open elections, above all else. Our founders believed that voters must always have the facts, no matter how difficult those facts could be to accept, especially when it challenges one’s deeply held beliefs about a candidate or political party. Our founders were attacked for taking positions rooted in fact back then, and today, not much has changed. League leaders continue to face this challenge and often stand accused of being partisan for our efforts to advance democracy.

The League Observer Corps monitors local government bodies for information of importance to the League and to our communities. Observing is a vital aspect of our civic engagement mission.

Position

Township government should be accessible, transparent, and fiscally sound.

Position

The League of Women Voters of Connecticut urges all political parties to make their process more accessible to the public.

Position

The League of Women Voters of Connecticut believes that a free and open Internet is increasingly important to the protection of individual liberties – freedom of speech, freedom of the press, and freedom of association – guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution and by the Connecticut Constitution.

The League of Women Voters of Metro St. Louis has adopted a number of local positions describing our interests in good government in our region.  These emphasize high ethical standards, transparency, and ample public participation.

In terms of ethics, we have supported written and enforceable ethical standards for elected officials and lobbyists, limits on campaign contributions, and other actions that limit the power of moneyed interests.
