Dear Members,
There are many important things happening that require your attention. It's time to gear up for the Legislative session. While the session begins January 2021, committee meetings are taking place now and being closely monitored by LWVFL. You should receive the Capitol Report from the LWVFL reporting on the various legislative committees. Please read these and take action as requested by LWVFL.

Redistricting

After the independent redistricting commission failed to agree on maps, the Supreme Court of Virginia appointed Special Masters to draw the maps. The maps were approved in January of 2022.

You may have heard about redistricting, which sounds like an arcane bureaucratic activity that does not interest you. But redistricting will influence the partisan balance of power in the Florida Legislature and the U.S. Congress for the next decade. Redistricting will determine how influential your vote will be until 2032.

The Florida Senate has released drafts of eight Senate and eight congressional maps, which are posted on the website. The press is giving them good reviews, but all versions of the Senate maps divide Alachua County into two districts. Alachua County tends to vote differently than the surrounding counties and we are not aware of any reason to divide our county.

Action Alerts

Call the White House and demand that the Biden-Harris Administration get the Senate to fix or NIX the filibuster and PASS the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. The LWVUS will drive this message home with a demonstration in front of the White House on November 17. We can support that action from Connecticut by calling the White House now.
