LWV Schenectady County History
The LWV in Schenectady County was organized April 30, 1925, after Mrs. Charles Richmond, wife of the President of Union College, invited about fifty women to her home to learn about the New York State League. Those present were so impressed that most of them joined the League that day; and so our League’s journey began!
Right from the beginning the Schenectady County League was very active addressing relevant local issues, hosting candidate forums, educating voters, and Get Out The Vote was an early slogan. Today technology is totally different, local issues have changed, but we are still committed to providing accurate non-partisan candidate information as well as voting procedures and important dates. And we are still promoting “Get Out The Vote”!
Celebrating 100 years at Union College
This spring we celebrated our centennial anniversary by returning to Union College where it all began. The college’s president, David Harris, and his wife, Anne, graciously hosted the LWV Schenectady County with a program in the president’s house. It was a great celebration of our roots, learning some new facts, and looking forward to continuing our work.
