Running and Winning 2022

The LWVW and the AAUW hosted their unique one-day program for Westchester County female high school juniors and seniors in Running & Winning on April 21, 2022 at Manhattanville College Reid Castle.

These young women (we employ an inclusive definition of “woman” and “female” and welcome all people who identify as such) were selected by their school administrators and faculty to participate in this program. The program goal is to support our young participants’ aspirations to serve in public office and develop their leadership potential, and at the same time, to help our government institutions increase gender parity.

The program agenda included both learning from elected officials’ experiences and practical application.

●  Elected officials provided a brief recap as to how they became involved in politics.

●  Small teams of students interviewed elected officials in greater depth regarding the seeking and holding of public office.

●  Student teams designed a slogan, and wrote and delivered a meaningful campaign speech on an issue selected from a curated list.

LWVW is appreciates the support of our Sponsors:
Westchester Community Foundation (Gold); Westchester Library System (Silver); Westchester Black Women’s Political Caucus (Silver); Association of American University Women (Bronze); Manhattanville College (Bronze).

One way to reach greater representational parity for women is to develop leadership potential in the young women of our county. On May 18, Running and Winning went virtual! Women elected officials representing Westchester constituents at all levels of government-- including NYS Legislative elected officials and Westchester Legislators -- provided their sage advice and inspiration to female high school students about how they got started in politics, the challenges they faced, and how they persevered and succeeded.

New York State elected officials included: Lt. Governor Kathy Hochul; Senator and Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins; Senator Shelley Mayer; and Assemblymember Amy Paulin. Westchester County Legislators include: MaryJane Shimsky, Majority Leader; Margaret A. Cunzio, Minority Leader; Nancy E. Barr; Catherine Borgia; Terry Clements; Kitley S. Covill; Catherine F. Parker; and Ruth Walter.

Students Inside Albany

New York State Capitol BuildingThis Conference is an intensive four-day training experience held in the spring and is designed to immerse students in the process by which public policy is proposed, enacted and changed in New York State and educate them as to how they can influence and affect this process. Albany insiders discuss the operations of New York State government including how policy is shaped and enacted. Students develop knowledge of the disparate forces that influence policy development. Additionally, students are afforded the opportunity to observe Assembly and Senate sessions and to shadow both their Assembly members and Senators.

The 2023 Students Inside Albany Conference will take place in Albany, NY, May 21-14, 2023.

LWVW has selected a student from Peekskill High School to participate.
