Rank Choice Voting and Non-Partisan Primary Study

Following the 2023 convention, the LWVNY began studying ranked choice voting (RCV) for all levels and types of elections (i.e. local, state, federal, primary and general) and a review of New York State’s primary system with consideration of nonpartisan primaries. The results of the study have been divided into two separate board-approved position statements that we are asking local League and individual members to concur with. On Tuesday, Septmeber 20, at 7 p.m., League members will meet via Zoom to discuss this concurrence. Check out our study materials for the discussion.

Run For Office! A “How-To” For Prospective Candidates On February 26

People in our community—your friends and neighbors— gather monthly to grapple with the issues that make our communities work and flourish. They serve the public because, as former U.S. Representative Lee H. Hamilton once said, “… public service is a stimulating, proud and lively enterprise. It is not just a way of life; it is a way to live fully.”

What stops many people from coming forward to serve is lack of information. From simple questions like ‘How do I get on the ballot?’ to ‘How much time will I have to spend with my duties?’ and ‘Do I get paid?’ Come to the League's "Run for Office!" event on Wednesday, February 26, from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Clark Sports Center Community Room and learn the answers.

The League advocates for issues but does not support or oppose any candidates for office. Every League Board of Directors at each level is required to have a non-partisan policy. The League does not have a single policy that covers all Leagues. A link to the nonpartisan policy of the LWV of the Cooperstown area is available on our website.
