If you are a member of a local league in Hawaii, you are a member of LWV Hawaii, the state League, and LWVUS, our national League. On May 22, 2021, you have a chance to make your voice heard at the biennial state league convention. Due to COVID-19, the convention will be held by Zoom.

At convention, there will elections of the state board, adoption of the biennial program and annual budget, and voting on proposed motions.

What is the State Board? LWV Hawaii is governed and represented by the state board. As with the state House of Representatives, representatives (four officers and four directors) are elected every two years. In addition, up to four directors may be appointed by the board. These twelve people decide how and when the League will be represented not only at the State Legislature but in the public. Board meetings are quarterly.

Program is Priority. One of the most important responsibilities of the state league, which is governed by the state board, is to implement the program, or legislative priorities. Program is adopted by delegates at the biennial convention. The 2019-2021 program consisted of voter education and access, health care, and equality of opportunity. All mail voting was a milestone in this current biennium.

Priorities proposed by the current LWV Hawaii board include: elections (automatic voter registration (AVR) and fine-tuning all mail voting); criminal justice (enfranchising the incarcerated); campaign finance reform; government transparency in this time of COVID-19; and voter education.

What You Can Do. Every League member in Hawaii has a voice to influence the priorities. Bring your program ideas to your local league program planning session. Run for state board (contact me at doba5627 [at] gmail.com). Become a state convention delegate representing your local league. Make Democracy Work.
