March On For Voting Rights
August 28, 2021 - 58th Anniversary of MLK "I Have a Dream" Speech
March On For Voting Rights, a nationwide mobilization to demand that elected officials stop hijacking democracy, denounce voter suppression and ensure fair, easy access to the vote FOR ALL, will be held in various cities on Saturday, August 28, 2021. Voting rights advocates (like us, the League, folks!) across the USA will gather on the 58th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s historic March on Washington and "I Have a Dream" speech to demand that his vision be deferred no longer. Marches are set to be held in Washington DC, Atlanta, Miami, Phoenix and Houston.
In DC, volunteers will set up, starting at 8:00AM at McPherson Square. The March will begin at 9:45AM at BlackLives Matter Plaza; from 11:30 AM - 3:00 PM, Rally continues in front of the African American History Museum (14th & Constitution Streets) and will end at Hirshorn Sculpture on the Mall (near 7th Street & Madison Drive).
Search Google Maps for Black Lives Matter Plaza to see it on the map (16th and I Streets, NW).
The LWV of the National Capital Area (LWVNCA) and its member Leagues will be participating with voter registration, promoting Vote411.org to bring attention to the League and our historic role in voting rights. Among other dignitaries, LWVUS CEO Virginia Kase and President Deborah Turner will be there giving speeches and making "good trouble."
Many other organizations are participating in this event, so, this part of the notice is mainly for League members. LWV Volunteers meet at the LWVDC office, 1100 15th Street, NW, where Kathy Chiron will be stationed from 8:30 AM. Contact Kathy at president [at] lwvdc.org if you want to participate.
THIS IS YOUR TIME TO GET INVOLVED! As one League president said: "Our mission is to Empower Voters and Defend Democracy! We need to be front and center defending Voting Rights now just as we have been for the last 101+ years. I fear we are at a point of danger for our democracy and it is incumbent on us as members of the League to Not give up! Speak up! Stand up! and make sure we can go to bed each night knowing that we did what we could."
A League committe has been formed to organize the League's activities at the event. Contact president [at] lwvdc.org (Kathy C at LWVDC), LWVNCAWebmaster [at] gmail.com, president [at] lwv-va.org (Deb at LWV-VA), president [at] lwvmd.org (MD LWV presidents), sonia.lwvlc [at] gmail.com (Sonia) or joycestarks [at] aol.com (Joyce at LWVNCA) for information on how to participate.
