For the second consecutive year, LWV of Hawai`i County has been honored to be a part of Hawai`i History Day for Hawai`i District by sponsoring an award for an outstanding student project that demonstrates civic engagement, advocacy, and/or voter education on strengthening democracy and transparency.

Listen to Malia Hill, recipient of the 2021 Award, talk about her project, "The Salt March: India's Peaceful Plea." Malia shares about why she chose this topic, what she learned from the project, and why the Salt March is important to Hawai`i Island residents today. Her presentation is followed by a brief Q&A.

Malia is a student at Waiakea High School, and was supported by Kelly Uyeda, her social studies teacher. Hawai`i History Day is a program of the Hawai`i Council for the Humanities.

Learn more about Civic Engagement and the Social Studies Curriculum in Hawai`i, a presentation by Hawai`i History Day Director Shannon Cristobal.
