It’s What We Do—Getting Out the Vote
Postcard Campaign
My hat is off to Vicki Thompson for taking on the job of recruiting volunteers, preparing instructions, creating voter lists, and distributing supplies for our postcard campaign, all while moving her household and caring for family. I think she wears heels and dances backward (typical woman)!
Of course, the volunteers who picked up materials to write several postcards (hundreds, for some) deserve huzzahs for their role in reaching low-propensity voters this May to increase the chance that they will participate in the June Primary. Together, they mailed more than 4,500 postcards—well over the 3,900 sent leading up to the November 2020 election. Good job!
Candidate Forums
Be sure to read Katherine Gavzy’s account of the candidate forums the League facilitated during April and May. This program is one very much appreciated by high-propensity voters who care about city council and school board elections and want the chance to make an informed choice. Reading information about candidates is good but doesn’t beat the chance to ask them questions!
Voter Hotline
Read about the work Amy Majeske is doing to make sure voters know what to do when they get their vote-by-mail ballot or if they miss the voter registration deadline (which was May 23). Getting help finding information about judicial candidates makes it easier to vote 100 percent of your ballot!
High School Voter Registration
Though schools continue to wrestle with being back in person, we managed to get into six high schools to preregister students during the lunch break and made it into seven classrooms to talk about the power of the vote. We are very grateful to Rose City, Pasadena, Muir, Marshall, Duarte, and Del Mar High Schools for welcoming our League volunteers. We even managed to get invited back for the general election in November. Stayed tuned to find out how you can join our small but mighty group of high school presenters!
