BACKGROUND
2021 is the year that US Congressional and Ohio House and Senate districts will be redrawn… a once-in-a-decade opportunity! Every 10 years, the nation and individual states redraw their congressional and state district maps using newly released 10-year US Census data. Many voters in Ohio are excited about this prospect as Ohio has some of the worst gerrymandered districts in the country. One district, the 9th Congressional, stretches 96 miles from Toledo to Cleveland and, at one point, is connected by only a bridge across the water.
After the release of 2011's set of gerrymandered district maps, Ohioans said NO MORE! In 2015 and 2018, more than 70% of Ohio voters, in all 88 counties, overwhelmingly voted for significant mapmaking reforms that change how Congressional and Ohio Legislative maps are drawn. These reforms improve transparency, mandate public input, ensure both political parties are represented, and have outlined restrictions on breaking up communities into multiple districts.
The Census Bureau released 2020 population data on August 12, 2021. Upon release, that data is immediately configured into usable mapmaking data, which can take up to 2 weeks. Once configured... redistricting will begin!
