The 2025 League of Women Voters of Oklahoma bi-annual gala will be an inspirational evening that you won’t want to miss, so mark your calendar now and plan to join us for this special evening!

At this year’s gala, the League will honor Oklahoma’s independent, nonpartisan news outlets in Oklahoma (media without government or corporate influence). These news outlets hold public officials accountable, counter misinformation, protect freedom of expression, and enable informed decision making. It goes without saying that independent media provide the foundation of a democracy.

Our keynote speaker this year is Ziva Branstetter. Since 2022, Ziva has led a team of national investigative reporters at ProPublica who are focused on exposing wrongdoing by holding people and institutions accountable and producing lasting impactsZiva previously worked at the Tulsa World and was a co-founder of The Frontier, an investigative newspaper in Oklahoma. She also was a senior editor at Reveal News and an editor at The Washington Post. Earlier this year, a ProPublica team that included Ziva won the prestigious Pulitzer Prize for public service for the series “Life of the Mother.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER

Ziva Branstetter

Since 2022, Ziva has led a team of national investigative reporters at ProPublica focused on exposing wrongdoing, holding people and institutions responsible for it accountable and creating lasting impact.

Investigations that she’s edited and supervised during her career have won three George Polk Awards, two Scripps Howard awards, two Overseas Press Club awards and multiple other national awards. She was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for a project she led and co-reported. And in May of this year, a ProPublica team that included Ziva won the prestigious Pulitzer Prize for public service for the series “Life of the Mother,” which the judges described as “urgent reporting about pregnant women who died after doctors delayed urgently needed care for fear of violating vague ‘life of the mother’ exceptions in states with strict abortion laws.”

From 2018 to March 2022, Ziva supervised a team of reporters focused on corporate accountability at The Washington Post. She was the lead editor on The Post's Pandora Papers project, which prompted new laws and won numerous international and national journalism awards. She also led investigations into President Trump's business empire, cocoa companies' use of child labor in West Africa, companies whose products killed and maimed children and the pandemic's impact on nursing home residents.

Ziva was previously a senior editor at Reveal and co-founder of The Frontier, an investigative newsroom in Oklahoma. She spent two decades as a reporter and editor at the Tulsa World, where my coverage of Oklahoma's flawed death penalty system was named a 2015 Pulitzer Prize finalist in local reporting.

Investigations Ziva has led have resulted in changes in federal, state and municipal laws, exonerated wrongfully convicted people and spurred indictments and resignations of corrupt officials. She also served three terms on the board of Investigative Reporters and Editors Inc.
