One Person One Vote
Direct Popular Vote for the U.S. President and Vice President
The League of Women Voters of the United States has supported the abolition of the Electoral College since 1970. Since 2010, the League has supported the use of the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact (NPV) as an acceptable way to achieve the goal of a direct popular vote for election of the President. NPV is a first step until the abolition of the Electoral College through a constitutional amendment.
Join the LWV of Virginia in supporting the National Popular Vote so that Virginia's 13 electors can vote for the candidate that received the most popular votes in the nation. The Commonwealth of Virginia's General Assembly can achieve this by passing one bill. The language of the bill is the same for each state involved. It would go into effect when states totaling 270 electors (the number needed for a majority) have joined the interstate compact. Already states with electors totaling 209 are signed up and waiting for us to get to other states to join so we can reach 270.
