Youth Council

Public engagement, especially with students, has a greater chance of success if it includes our students and community leaders who can help bridge any divide between students and our local government.

This is why we have started our

Youth Council

which is only open to high school students.*

Our Goals are to Initiate programs and projects that will benefit our youth and our communities.

Projects that Youth Council members may work on are:

This is not all inclusive. If we have a student with a specific idea, we should allow that to be considered. We want to foster a spirit of imagination.

  • Assist with local leagues voter registration – the league closest to them or they can try to work on areas where we have no local leagues to see if we can get into those schools.
  • Social media videos, graphics.
  • GOTV on their campus – whether HS
  • Pre-registration of 16-year-olds
  • Conduct youth candidate forums/assist with State Senate Forum if one is being done that year.
  • Website update – they will have a page on the website to share information
  • Visits to legislators during Session – learning the legislative process – and helping with advocacy.
  • Partner with youth groups that are working with our partner organizations.
  • Interact with local leagues – if assistance is needed.
  • Outreach to other youth groups regarding the League
  • Assist with ongoing programs for which we may need assistance on state level.

Students will be asked to give 5- 10 hours per week depending on the program they choose to work on. These positions are unpaid but letters of honor and/or school credit hours will be given to all who successfully complete the work.

There will be three one-year cohorts of ten students per cohort. Cohorts will be staggered, May, August, and December.

May cohorts will be chosen by April 20 – deadline for application is April 1. August cohorts will be chosen by July 20 – deadline for application is July 1 and December cohorts will be chosen by Nov 20 and deadline is November 20.

Application is below.

Our students are an important part of our communities.... they are our future!

The League of Women Voters of Virginia was formed out of the suffrage movement on November 10, 1920. The League encourages informed and active participation in government to increase understanding of major public policy issues and to influence public policy through education and advocacy.

We are dedicated to working and supporting students that have a passion for voting rights, democracy and much more.

Our Past Interns researched legislation, created press releases and graphics, provided translation services and so much more. We are grateful for their many contributions.

Our NEW PROGRAM* will continue to allow high school students to enrich their future career opportunities, explore different fields and serve others in need.

They are our future!

*Our Youth Council Does NOT Supersede or REPLACE our Intern Program.
