PLANNING, LAND USE AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT 1967, 1971, 1982, 1983, 1988, 2013, 2016, 2019, name update 2022)(2023)

The League of Women Voters of Arlington and Alexandria City supports responsible planning in land use and economic development that provides the opportunity for citizen participation and incorporates the concept of Corporate Social Responsibility.

Specifically, we support:

 1. Short-and-long range planning in Arlington County and Alexandria City with regular evaluation of long-range plans; a cost benefit study of land use; provision for adequate utilities and community services in original site plans. There should be community participation at all phases of long-range planning. (1971)

2. We are aware that planning entails innovative county and city outreach with residents, especially marginalized communities, and includes opportunities for citizens to participate as advisory committee members and to give input and testimony during charette processes and other community development activities to ensure consistency with all relevant League positions including Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, (DEI). (2022)

3. Written urban design standards are needed for areas designated for redevelopment. (1983, 2019)

4. The use of planning methodology that uses decision making and priority setting tools including comprehensive strategic planning, urban and environmental infrastructure research, fiscal management, professional and community collaboration. This includes monitoring the progress of Alexandria Vision Plan 2049 to assure it meets its goals to develop a community Vision to guide how Alexandria will meet the challenges of the future and grow into a livable, green, and prospering city for all. (2023)

Economic Development

1. We support County and City consideration of greater residential density zoning in currently lower density areas and efforts to reverse historic system racism in zoning practices. (2023)

2. The continued development of open space for parks and recreation. (1971) Acquiring and preserving open space to create diverse, accessible, and environmentally sustainable green spaces throughout the County and City including in areas targeted for denser development. (2023)

3. Preserving and enhancing the historic character of Arlington County and Alexandria City consistent with all relevant League positions. (2023)

Economic Development and Corporate Social Responsibility (2023)

a. Economic development in Arlington County and Alexandria City consistent with all relevant League positions (2019) and encompassing the precepts of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR.)

b. Assure that company operations are equitable and economically sustainable.

c. Equitable and sustainable distribution of economic development investments, particularly to small and socially disadvantaged businesses, to include minority-owned and woman-owned businesses to align with current League DEI policies.
