LWV Monterey County Poster Art Contest

LWV Monterey County Poster Art Contest

HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE FOR DEMOCRACY THOUGH ART

The League of Women Voters of Monterey County

is sponsoring a high-school art contest on the theme:

“Your Vote Is Your Voice—Register & Vote.”

We are seeking eye-catching poster art to support our voter registration efforts throughout this election year.

Contest Rules

  1. Submissions should respond to the prompt: “Your Voice Is Your Vote—Register & Vote.”
  2. Artwork should reflect a non-partisan call to voting without reference to any candidate or political party.
  3. Students residing in or attending high school (grades 9-12) in Monterey County are eligible to participate. There is no citizenship requirement for participants.
  4. The contest is open for submissions from February 1- March 11, 2024. Entrants should email a jpeg file, along with the contest application form (attached below), to LWVartcontest [at] gmail.com.  Artists should retain their original artworks in case the League needs to use or copy the originals. We will make a good-faith effort to return any originals we request but we cannot guarantee that they will be returned or maintained in undamaged condition.
  5. Art should be two-dimensional. Acceptable media include various paint media (e.g. acrylic, watercolor, oil, etc.), drawing media (pen, marker, pastels, etc.) and collage. Digital art is also acceptable.
  6. Art should not be generated by artificial intelligence (AI).
  7. While we envision that most submissions will come from individuals, we will accept submissions from groups of up to three students.
  8. A grand prize of $200 will be awarded. A number of additional merit awards ($75) will also be conferred.
  9. A selection of submissions will be on display at libraries throughout Monterey County and at the Peace & Justice Center in Seaside from late March through late April, 2024. As display space in the libraries in limited, most art shown there will be in 8 1/2x11 format.
  10. Criteria for assessment include: visual impact when reproduced as a poster or flyer; clear linkage to the theme of voting; and originality.
  11. Contestants must agree to allow the League to use their artwork throughout the 2024 election
  12. Questions about the contest can be sent to: LWVartcontest [at] gmail.com.

Some background information about the League of Women Voters:

The League of Women Voters was founded more than 100 years ago by suffragists who successfully fought for the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which granted women the right to vote. The League is a non-partisan organization, not affiliated with any political party. Both women and men are welcome to join (and student membership in our local league, The League of Women Voters of Monterey County, is free!). For a century the League has worked to protect and extend voting rights, to encourage citizens to vote, and to give voters the information they need to participate effectively in their democracy. The League produces the Vote411.org website, which provides information about registration and voting, including which candidates and ballot measures will appear on an individual voter’s ballot.
