Not Going Quietly: Ady Barkan and the Crisis in Healthcare

Thursday, November 17, 2022

6 to 8:45 pm, online via Zoom

PUBLIC WELCOME

“The knowledge I was dying was terrible… then congress came after our healthcare.”

Sometimes the most powerful way to understand a complicated issue is to see it unfold in the life of an individual. Along with the League of Women Voters of Berkeley, Albany and Emeryville, we will co-sponsor a presentation of the documentary Not Going Quietly (1 hour, 36 minutes).

Not Going Quietly chronicles the activism of Ady Barkan, a lawyer with a young family, diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, commonly called “Lou Gehrig’s Disease”) at age 32. The documentary follows Barkan as he faces declining health and mounting health insurance bills. After a tax cut that would decrease Medicare disability benefits is introduced in Congress, Barkan sets out with a team on a nationwide bus tour ahead of the 2018 elections to capture on video some of the discussions with candidates about the effects of decreasing healthcare benefits.

Mr. Barkan will also pre-record a message, especially for our event. The film will be followed by a panel discussion.

Everyone is welcome. To register, visit the League of Women Voters of Berkeley, Albany and Emeryville website, here. https://www.lwvbae.org/league-news/not-going-quietly/
