Senate Fails to Enact DISCLOSE Act

by Shannon Augustus

WASHINGTON — Today the League of Women Voters of the United States CEO Virginia Kase Solomón  issued the following statement in response to the failed 49-49 US Senate vote on the DISCLOSE Act:

“We are disappointed our elected officials in the Senate failed to advance legislation that would require public disclosure when it comes to dark money groups seeking to influence elections.

“Voters have the right to know who is making large campaign contributions to influence elections and their votes. When contributions are made, we believe it must be done with transparency. Transparency is a baseline requirement for a healthy democracy.

“The League will continue to fight to ensure that voters can make decisions free from the influence of dark money and special interest groups in our politics. We call on our elected officials to continue to put this issue at the forefront of the fight for our democracy. And we call on the White House to also look for ways to address campaign finance and ensure transparency in our election process.”
