The League of Women Voters joins those rare, storied, historic organizations that reach the century-old mark. A movement that blossomed out of the suffragists’ fight for American women to have the right to vote has earned its stripes over these hundred years, with chapters in fifty states and seven hundred communities. The LWV stands strong and ready to forge a new frontier in its second century.
In the Pasadena Area League, our trifecta birthday celebration included a performance by LWVLA member Renee Chanon as Susan B. Anthony, a public rally at Pasadena City Hall to alert all residents to election changes and census information, and a centennial celebration of “The Power of Leadership” honoring Robbie Davis, Laura Farber, Gloria Gray, and Karen Lawrence—four women who are blazing trails, opening doors, and using their talents to uplift our communities and move them forward.
With March designated as Women’s History Month, LWV-PA is in the forefront of bringing the power of women to reality through our work and programs at every level in our service area. Our visibility, our sound and trusted name, and our hardworking members, both men and women, are elevating women as leaders at the local, state, and national levels.
I must give high accolades to several members who have been carrying the lion’s share of our volunteerism over the months leading up to and beyond our hundred-year celebration. Martha Zavala (Voter Services), Katherine Gavzy (Events), Mildred Dockery (Development), and their teams of committed, enthusiastic, and dependable LWV volunteers have been hitting the streets with training, voter registration, community forums on upcoming election changes, local candidate forums, gala event planning, and much more.
All this while the League continues with our ongoing programs, such as League Days, climate and policing forums, and of course, advocacy at the state level. The Communications team has been very active, promoting our activities and bringing us our new e-Voter. LWV-PA has a strong cadre of dedicated and passionate activists, like you, and we are so very grateful that you share your time, talent, and treasure with us.
Yours in the Movement,
Patricia A. Coulter
