Question: What can cities like Pasadena do to fight global climate change?
Answer: ?
As all of us know, climate change is having an increasingly significant impact on our health, our lives, and our property. Its effects are escalating as we speak. Taking action to mitigate climate change is a top priority of the League at the national, state, and local levels.
At the national level, the League has taken a strong position on climate change: “The League is calling for prompt action to cut this country’s GHG [greenhouse gas] emissions, invest in a clean energy economy, and help the world’s poorest countries tackle the challenges of climate change.” The California League convention approved a resolution declaring a climate change emergency. This January, our Pasadena Area membership identified climate change as our top priority.
So what can we do? We can educate and inform voters, the great mission of our organization. We decided to look at Pasadena’s climate action plan (CAP). What specific “actions” does Pasadena commit to in its 2018 CAP? Have the commitments of Pasadena’s CAP been fulfilled? What are the implications for other area cities and communities?
Come to our virtual League@Nite event Thursday, March 18, from 7:00 to 8:15 p.m. to learn more. The topic is Pasadena’s CAP, which will affect all Pasadena-area residents for years to come. Our guest speakers will be David Reyes, Director of Planning for the City of Pasadena, and Dean Kubani, Chair of the City of Santa Monica Task Force on The Environment and former Chief Sustainability Officer (retired 2019). Their topic: “Putting the Action in Local Climate Action Plans.”
The answer to the question at the beginning of this article is C, something good and important. We may not be able to do everything, but our cities and our members can do a lot. Join the conversation and register for what promises to be an enlightening evening.
