The Breakthrough Project was created in Lodi in 1998 in response to a burning cross and
racial epithets found spray-painted at Tokay High School. Come and learn how in the years
since, Breakthrough has worked to spread the message of peace and unity and an
appreciation of Lodi’s diversity. Our speaker will be Breakthrough President and long-time
Lodi resident Maria Elena Serna, the first Latina to be elected to public oIice in San
Joaquin County, in 1990, and the first Latina to serve on the Delta College Board of Trustees.
An organizer for the United Farmworkers in the 1960s and 1970s, Ms. Serna was appointed
by both Governor Davis and Governor Schwarzenegger to the California Student Aid
Commission and the Scholarship Investment Board.
Lunch costs at Papapavlo's vary but are generally under $25, exclusive of tip. Since Papapavlo's
does not provide separate checks, please bring cash to give to the host who receives the check.
