Note from Carole Paterson, LWV Solano President

Let’s

celebrate the arrival of Fall! A good time to reflect on the cycles and seasons of our earth.

Climate change was the focus of our General Meeting on September 22nd. We were very fortunate to have Dr. Bonnie Hamilton share with us many points of concern about practices that are affecting our earth…and its inhabitants.

Dr. Hamilton, who is a League member, assembled an excellent PowerPoint/video presentation which has been added to our LWV Solano YouTube Channel for you to view---I think you will find it compelling. A special thanks to Maryanne Perlmutter who sought Dr. Hamilton’s expertise and who also added “101 Ways You Can Personally Combat Climate Change.” Check out other resources on our website which provide suggestions for things we can all do.

Our next General Meeting will be in early December and the focus will be Racial Inclusiveness, Justice, and Equity—which was identified by our membership as our top priority for this program planning cycle. If you are interested in being part of this program development please contact me, or any member of the Program Planning and Events Committee—Craig Paterson, Rami Muth, Janice Adams, Maryanne Perlmutter. Step Up! Get involved!

REFLECTIONS from Rami Muth, LWV Solano Vice President

The right to vote is under siege. According to the Brennan Center for Justice, “between January 1 and July 14, 2021, at least 18 states enacted 30 laws that restrict access to the vote. These laws make mail voting and early voting more difficult, impose harsher voter ID requirements, and make faulty voter purges more likely, among other things. More than 400 bills with provisions that restrict voting access have been introduced in 49 states in the 2021 legislative sessions.” These statistics are alarming. Voting rights and voter registration remains one of the primary priorities for the League of Women Voters. Efforts to that thwart that right or limit it in significant ways goes against the very purpose of why we exist as an organization. We will continue our efforts to ensure that all eligible voters have full access to this important right.

As part of our efforts the LWV Solano will be participating in the ‘Adopt a Poll’ effort in Solano County by manning the polls at Matthew Turner Elementary School in Benicia for the upcoming California Recall Election on September 14th. All eligible voters will receive a mail in ballot in the mail about a month before the election. You can vote by mail, drop your ballot at a secure designated voting location or you can vote in person.

What’s on the ballot? There will be two questions on the ballot that every eligible Californian can vote on:

1.Do you want to recall the governor (remove him from office)?
2.If the governor is recalled, who do you want to replace him?
If more than 50% of voters say “no” to the first question, the governor remains in office. If more than 50% of voters say “yes” to the first question, the person who gets the most votes on the second question becomes the governor.
