PRESS RELEASE: LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS SOLANO COUNTY (LWVSC), JULY 2020

As we celebrate the anniversary of the ratification of the Declaration of Independence it’s fitting that we remember that the United States is a nation of every creed and color, yet notions of “racial superiority” based on skin color alone govern the human subconscious to this day. For centuries, ignorance and prejudice have relegated Black Americans to underfunded school systems, over-policed neighborhoods, subnormal healthcare options, underpaid work, and laws that systematically and grievously disadvantage people of color.

The League of Women Voters of Solano County stands with the National League in declaring the following:

The protests we’ve seen across America, from rural communities to major cities, over the last month are a call for long overdue change by the people of every race, age, and gender who elected this Congress. The League stands in solidarity with the Black community in demanding an end to police violence against people of color. The Senate must move the strongest bill possible to rectify the systemic racism that has taken the lives of countless Black and Brown people. They must strengthen and pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act.”

We call on local, state, and national governments to rise to this moment and take additional steps to redefine public safety and prioritize investments in economic opportunities, education, healthcare, and other community-led solutions. We encourage all citizens to contact your local, state, and national representatives to act to make democracy work for all. The League of Women Voters of Solano County commits to being actively anti-racist through word and action.”

Reason dictates that every human has the potential to enrich and beautify the world we all share.  To deny this in one’s self or in society at large is delusional, and delusions are toxic. They eat away at the roots of reason. It’s in everyone’s interest to enable as many of us as possible to contribute, participate, and excel. When the path to fulfillment is blocked for anyone, the collective human future dims.

Virginia Kase, CEO of the National League of Women Voters stated:

“We also mourn those who have lost their lives or been harmed, mentally or physically, as a result of America’s pervasive culture of anti-blackness. The perpetuated myth of white supremacy in our country must be dismantled if we are ever to become the nation we pledge to be—indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

The League of Women Voters is committed to a just and promising future for all Americans.
