THANK YOU TO OUR MEMBERS AND VOLUNTEERS
Democracy is not something you believe in or a place to hang your hat, but it's something you do.
Democracy is not something you believe in or a place to hang your hat, but it's something you do.
We want to express our sincere gratitude to all of you who gave of your time and efforts during the election season. We called upon people to help with candidate forums and informational presentations throughout Solano County. Some individuals spent countless hours helping people register to vote while others supported Democracy Matters efforts in the classrooms throughout the county. The jobs varied but the dedication and commitment to ensuring that democracy is not a spectator sport did not. This unwavering commitment is what sets the League of Women Voters apart and we thank each of you for your selfless giving and ongoing support.
This statement from the Executive Director of the LWV California, Stephanie Doute, helps to explain the importance the role each of us plays in this journey. “The Washington Post reminds us that “Democracy dies in darkness.” But there is no darkness when we understand that democracy is a collection of our lives, our work, and our stories. Democracy is the container for who we are, what we do, our hopes and dreams, and our accomplishments. Democracy is the sum total of our stories, our votes, our work, our voices. And in this, there is no darkness—our voices and our stories continue.”
Much work still needs to be done, and we hope you will join us in our efforts moving forward. We have recently applied for grant funding for Youth Voter Registration and Citizens on Day One. Our goal is to continue to inform, inspire, and create a pathway to action. These initiatives will be part of our work in the coming year, and we hope you will join us in bringing them to life.
The 2025 Bay Region Academic Decathlon is an exciting opportunity to be part of the action hosted by the Solano County Office of Education in Fairfield on February 1, 2025. The Academic Decathlon is an event that challenges 16 Bay Area high school teams in their knowledge about a wide variety of topics. Volunteers are needed to support this exciting event. DEMOCRACY IN ACTION
"The vote is precious. It is the most powerful nonviolent tool we have in a democratic society."

With Election Day fast approaching, the LWV has announced the launch of a new campaign finance feature on VOTE411, which allows voters to see who funds candidate campaigns. This new tool reflects the League’s commitment to political transparency and will further empower voters to make an informed and educated vote before casting their ballot.
This month, LWVSolano has been very busy engaging and empowering voters throughout Solano County. We held seven candidate forums, providing vital opportunities for citizens to learn about their choices. Be sure to check out the recordings of these events through the links on our website! Additionally, our Pondering the Proposition forums took place at four different venues, helping to clarify important ballot measures.

In our ongoing commitment to education, we taught interactive civics lessons and organized a field trip to the registrar of voters' offices, empowering our youth with knowledge about the electoral process. We also supported the students at Solano Community College with a voter registration drive and with an afternoon of interactive civics games as a means to inform, engage and inspire our youngest voters.
How Can You Help? We’re looking for volunteers to:
- Support the implementation of Democracy Matters in local high schools.
- Help with our websites or social media, we need your help on our communications committee.

Empowering Voters, Defending Democracy
July 24, 2024
July 1st marks the beginning of our league's new fiscal year, and we have many exciting changes on the horizon. The year of a presidential election always generates a great deal of energy, and we are prepared to meet the challenges of this moment. Our new board includes Janice Adams, Vice President, Char Hummel as Treasurer, and Leslie Lessenger as Secretary. Additionally, we welcome directors Barbara King, Sarah Chapman, Craig Paterson, Carole Paterson, Kathy Pratt, Mary Cornaby, and Marti Hardisty.
After 16 dedicated years, Judy Potter is leaving her role as Treasurer. She has graciously prepared transition materials to assist our new Treasurer Char Hummel. We sincerely thank her for her many years of service and look forward to her continued participation in the league.
Alice Fried, creator and driving force of Democracy Matters is moving to Georgia. Democracy Matters is a hands-on civics education program that brings to life the importance of active engagement by all citizens. This signature program has been recognized in our county, by the LWV California, and at the LWV national level. To ensure this important program continues to grow, Alice has provided us with a detailed program packet including curriculum and implementation resources. Her leadership and infectious energy will truly be missed.
At our recent Board retreat, we identified Voter Services as our #1 priority for the first half of this year. Voter registration, Get out the Vote efforts and candidate and informational forums will be the primary focus of this work. We will also explore different methods of communication and outreach and will actively work with partner organizations to continue our work to empower voters and defend democracy. We encourage you to join us in these efforts.
