Since 2018, more than 12 million voter registration transactions have taken place at the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) through the new Motor Voter program. While in many ways the initiative has been a success, 3 million eligible adults in California remain unregistered. We need your help to reach them. Act now and tell your Assemblymember to vote YES on AB 796 (Berman).
Help Us Streamline Voter Registration at the DMV |
The Motor Voter program wasn’t an overnight success. It has taken years of stakeholder collaboration – and a lawsuit – to build and refine the system. And despite improvements, there are still impediments to equitable voter registration at the DMV. AB 796 would help solve that problem. Urge your Assemblymember to vote YES on AB 796.
We are supporting AB 796 to:
- Make permanent the DMV’s current practices that were put in place as the result of the League of Women Voters of California v. Annis court case.
- Improve oversight and transparency of the Motor Voter program.
- Ensure voter registrations are processed in a timely and fair manner.
Demand a More Inclusive System to Strengthen Our Democracy |
Of the nearly 3 million eligible yet unregistered Californians, a disproportionate number are youth, people with disabilities, Black, Latinx, Native, Indigenous, and people of color, those with limited English proficiency, or people with low income. With AB 796, we can remove impediments to voter registration and make it easier for these Californians to participate in our democracy. Please take action today.
Sincerely,
Carol Moon Goldberg
President, LWVC
