Our League

We anticipate a summer of action around the For the People Act, S1. Next week, the Senate is expected to vote on S1. This could be the first of many votes on the bill. We must continue to let our senators know, no matter where they currently stand, that we the people need them to protect the freedom to vote for all Americans and pass S1. Please continue to share our action alert with your networks! We also encourage you to join us on OutreachCircle to stay up to date with ways to support S1.

To promote engagement and activism on this critical issue, on Wednesday, June 23, our organizing team is hosting a Friendbank. Participants can invite their friends, families, and networks to take action to ensure the For the People Act is passed. Register for the Friendbank today!

Our Courts

This morning, the Supreme Court issued rulings in two important cases, California v. Texas—upholding the Affordable Care Act—and Fulton v. City of Philadelphia, ruling in favor of a Philadelphia Catholic social services group that refused to consider married LGBTQ+ couples for foster care. As June wraps, we are still watching for Supreme Court rulings in Americans for Prosperity v. Bonta and Brnovich v. Democratic National Committee. These rulings will have an impact on the influence of money in politics and voting rights.

Our Legislature

We are excited to see that the Senate has unanimously voted to make Juneteenth, the anniversary of the end of chattel slavery in our country, a federal holiday. This is a step in the right direction, but it does not rectify the continued inequities in our country nor the racist violence we still see being perpetrated today. Bills like the For the People Act, the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, the Emmett Till Anti-Lynching Act, and the Washington, DC Admission Act (HR 51) are crucial in ensuring true equity for and protection of Black people in our country.

I encourage you all to celebrate this Saturday by expanding your knowledge of Black History and mobilizing on the issues that impact Black lives. But more importantly, I ask you to take the pledge to say something when you hear or see racist comments or acts. The duty to make America a country which truly exemplifies justice and freedom for all is on each of us—inside and outside of League.

Finally, as I come to end of my first year as your president and look forward to things to come, I would like to thank you all for your time, your support, and your incredible hard work. We are a great organization, and we will become greater as we work toward a League that truly supports our diversity, equity, and inclusion values and as we continue to defend democracy and empower voters.

In League,

Deborah
