Woodland’s League plans to reinstate it’s in-person informational presentations and voter registration for eligible high school students in all three schools this spring. Meetings with newly appointed Superintendent Elodia Ortega-Lampkin and school Principals indicate that the WJUS District is looking forward to reintroducing this in-school program after a two year hiatus. Spearheading the endeavor is the Leagues Acting Voter Services Chair, Carla Cox, who with her team of volunteers, will provide the in-person presentations at Woodland, Pioneer & Cache Creek High Schools. Eligible student can register to vote either online or the usual paper registration forms will be available and will be delivered directly to the County Elections Office.

Current League President, Karen Urbano is “very excited to provide this program which was so successful in past years. Students hear information about their right to vote in our presentation which is a real introduction to this adult responsibility.”

As the current elections cycle begins the League plans two community forums featuring candidates for the local District Attorney and Sherriff’s races. As these are countywide offices, the forums will be planned jointly with the Davis League. Tentatively, the candidates for District Attorney are scheduled to participate in a forum on Wednesday, April 27th, at the Woodland Community & Senior Center, 2001 East Street, Woodland at 7:00 pm. Questions developed by the League and audience questions will be answered by candidates. More information about additional forums will be available as soon as scheduling is completed.

Also noteworthy is the League Board decision to extend the Democracy Works Award nominations deadline through Sunday, March 27th. This is intended to allow all residents of Woodland and the adjacent rural communities sufficient time to submit their applications. Nomination applications should describe how a particular individual, business or organization exemplifies democracy in action in our community.

Nomination applications will be available at the League’s table during the Women’s History Month celebration scheduled at the Gibson Mansion on Saturday, March 26th. Applications are also available on the League website: my.lwv.org/california/woodland or can be requested by contacting the Democracy Works Committee at: . Completed forms can be mailed to LWV Woodland, Attn: Democracy Works Award, P.O. Box 2463, Woodland, Ca 95776 or emailed to the League at the above address.
