POSTPONED.
This event has been postponed due to the Coronavirus risk. It will be rescheduled.
The League of Women Voters of Delaware, in partnership with The Freeman Stage, will present a mini film series in April at the Cinema Art Theater located at 17701 Dartmouth Drive, Lewes. The establishment of the League 100 years ago in February was a direct outgrowth of the Suffrage Movement, which will celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment in August of this year. These films help tell the story as viewed at different periods of history by different groups of people: and there will be a discussion period after each movie to help us sort out background and events.
Following is the schedule and a brief description of each film:
- Wednesday, April 1 at 4:00 PM – “The Suffragette”
Academy Award nominees Carey Mulligan and Helena Bonham Carter, and three-time Academy Award winner Meryl Streep, lead the cast of a powerful drama about women in the UK in the early 1900s, who were willing to lose everything to gain the right to vote. - Wednesday, April 8 at 4:00 PM – “She’s Beautiful When She’s Angry”
Filmmaker Mary Dore chronicles the events and the movers and the shakers of the feminist movement from 1966 to 1971. - Wednesday, April 15 at 4:00 PM – “Standing on My Sisters’ Shoulders”
Through moving interviews and powerful archival footage, the film weaves a story of commitment, passion and perseverance and tells the story of the women who fought for change in Mississippi and altered the course of American history forever.
