January 2023 Highlights

Welcome to our first monthly “Highlights,” a snapshot of League activities and news.

We hit the ground running this year and are happy to report:

Youth Voter Registration Project 2023 – The Voter Services Committee is thrilled to announce that the LWVUS Education Fund awarded us a $500 grant to carry out a Youth Voter Registration Project! On 1/13 we kicked off an exciting partnership with League members and DelTech representatives. Over the next 6 months, we will work with Del Tech students and teachers, high school leaders, and community groups to deliver a pilot program to register young voters and educate them on how voting and civic involvement directly affect their lives. Contact judyparkins [at] gmail.com (subject: Youth%20Voter%20Registration%20Project) (Judy Parkins) for more information.

Fun Lunch: January 18m 12-2 pm, Irish Eyes, Milton – Our popular informal get-togethers continue with our next Fun Lunch planned for Wednesday, 1/18, 12 – 2 pm, at Irish Eyes in Milton. It’s a chance to meet some of the fascinating people who make up our membership and learn more about the League and our activities – including the Youth Voters project.Going forward, we will alternate daytime Fun Lunches with evening Happy Hours to accommodate members’ different schedules.

Early Childhood Education presentation: January 19, 7 pm., Zoom – You are invited to a Zoom presentation on the state of Early Childhood Education, January 19 at 7 PM, featuring Madeleine Bayard of Rodel (rodelde.org) and sponsored by the American Association of University Women (AAUW). This presentation continues the collaboration on Education topics between AAUW and the Social Policy Committee

Social Policy Committee: Access to Health Care – The Social Policy Committee is also considering a research and education project on Access to Health Care. If you’re interested in participating in a proposed subcommittee on this important topic, contact jkambrose [at] aol.com (subject: Access%20to%20Health%20Care%20Subcommittee) (Janet Ambrose), the Committee co-chair.

Membership – We added several new members each month since September, and now have 142 active members. A few members have not yet renewed for the 2022-2023 membership year and we’re preparing a final mailing to nudge them. If you haven’t renewed, we hope you will.

Treasurer – Our Treasurer, Pat Petchel, reports that we are running very close to our planned budget (that’s a good thing). And as of 12/31/2022, our current net worth was $14,138, slightly ahead of where we were in December 2021.
