Our League Registers New Voters

Millions of Americans celebrated National Voter Registration Day on Tuesday, September 26th. The League of Women Voters Sussex County, DE (LWVSC) participated in this massive 50-state effort to register new voters. Continuing with its "Focus on Millennials" in 2016, the League held two voter registration events at Delaware Technical Community College (Del Tech) + one at midday for day students and one in the evening for night students. The response to both showed an increased interest in voting and making a civic difference.

Millennials, born between 1980 and 1999, are becoming a very important voting sector. According to a 2017 Brookings Report, they are engaging in civic activity at a much higher rate than the previous generation and they will outpace "Boomers" as the largest voting block within the next ten years.

Registering new voters is only a first step. A more comprehensive outreach program is necessary to fully engage young adults. The League is actively developing education and technology elements to reach this segment....

said Connie Jones, Voter Services Chair for LWVSC. Del Tech is an excellent incubator and the League is partnering with the Dean of Student Services, Gail Charrier, and the President of Student Government Association, Miles Weber, to develop new approaches that are meaningful to Millennials.
