King tides are making news from Boston to Miami to Hawaii. Their increasing frequency indicates that rising sea levels that are here to stay in Hawaii. This poses a serious threat to homes, condos, hotels, and commercial and structures along the shoreline, as well as transportation and other aspects of our infrastructure. Recognizing the challenges, Oahu’s voters passed an amendment to Honolulu’s charter creating the Honolulu Office of Climate Change, Sustainability and Resiliency.
This issue is now a major focus as the League seeks to incorporate climate change as part of its position on the environment. We will continue to monitor and support the new office of climate change where we can as well as urge the legislature to address the challenge in the 2018-2019 session.
