LWVRB's Book and Film Club will feature the documentary, YOUTH V GOV and its companion book on the climate crisis by hosting both a virtual discussion on Wednesday, October 12th at 7 pm and an in-person discussion on Saturday, October 15 at 11 am at the Roselle United Methodist Church, located at 206 Rush St. in Roselle.

YOUTH V GOV is the story of the constitutional lawsuit, Juliana v. The United States of America, brought by 21 American youth against the world’s most powerful government. Since 2015, the legal non-profit Our Children’s Trust has been representing these youth, aged 14-25, in their landmark case against the U.S. government for violating their constitutional rights to life, liberty, personal safety, and property through their willful actions in creating the climate crisis they will inherit.  The youth court case, Juliana et al v United States, is supported by LWVUS. The companion book, They Knew: The US Government’s 50-Year Role in Causing the Climate Crisis offers evidence supporting the children's claims, presenting a  compelling account of the federal government's role in bringing about today's climate crisis.  Author Gus Speth analyzes how administrations from Carter to Trump continued aggressive support of a fossil fuel-based energy system — despite having information about the impending climate crisis and its connection to fossil fuels.

The League of Women Voters of Roselle-Bloomingdale Book and Film Club discusses documentaries and fiction and non-fiction books that will open our minds and generate discussion. We select titles that empower readers to help make the world a better place and provide a greater understanding of public affairs including political, social, economic, environmental, and other societal issues.
