Survey of staff photographs:

 

Scientists: All white. 9 of 23 are women.

Leadership: All white. 4/9 are women

Board of Directors has more diversity. Names/appearance indicate Black, Hispanic, Indian members and two women, but no indication on website of where they are from.

 

Search for “DEI” on webpage came up blank.

Search for “diversity” led mostly to focus on diverse environment.  However, two names emerged with reference to diversity initiatives:

In the 2024 Update, pp. 14-16 detail initiatives by Woodwell to address diversity, including, but not limited to:

  • Support of 20 URM (Underrepresented Minority) students in Polaris Project (study of Arctic) in Alaska. Students also participated in meetings with Alaskan Native youth, Society for Advancement of Chicanos & Hispanics, and Native American in Science.
  • Mentorship activities through the Woods Hole Partnership Education Program.
  • Assessment of interviewing and hiring practices; hiring rubric to minimize implicit bias.
  • Addition of fifth Officer at Large to the board of Directors, to focus on DEIJ issues for 1-2 years. 
  • Workshop for Board on DEIJ issues
  • Staff members serve on Woods Hole Diversity Advisory Committee, planning, staffing, and hosting annual events for Black History Month, Juneteenth, and Indigenous People’s Mont.
