Steven Levitsky, Harvard Professor of Government and co-author of How Democracies Die, was our guest for the June Brews & Views. His remarks and Q & A with League attendees can be seen on the LWVAAA YouTube channel.

Dr. Levitsky's view is that the Constitution alone is not sufficient to defend our democracy--we also need norms of behavior that guide political life, such as mutual toleration (accepting the legitimacy of political opponents) and institutional forbearance (self-restraint in the exercise of power). The erosion of these and other norms has led to today's extreme polarization in government.

What warnings did Dr. Levitsky give? What can we do about it?
