WASHINGTON — Today the League of Women Voters of the United States President Dr. Deborah Turner and CEO Virginia Kase Solomón issued the following joint statement in response to the 6 – 3 Supreme Court decision of Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which overturns the constitutional right to abortion as recognized for nearly 50 years in the landmark cases of Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey.

WASHINGTON — Today, the US Supreme Court ruled 6 – 3 in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen that New York’s 100-year-old law restricting certain individuals from carrying concealed weapons in public places is unconstitutional, effectively weakening gun safety laws around the country.

Know Your Rights! Important dates for August 2022 Primary Election
August 1 - If you are registered to vote where you live, you can vote absentee in person at your city or township clerk's office until 4 p.m. on August 1. After that you must vote at your polling location on Election Day.

August 2 - Election Day! The polls are open from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m. local time. If you need to register, you can register and then vote at your city or township clerk's office until 8 p.m.

Juneteenth

The holiday is celebrated on June 19th (thus the name, Juneteenth) because, on that date in 1865, Union soldiers announced to enslaved persons in Texas that the US Civil War had ended and that they had been freed from bondage by the Emancipation Proclamation (two years prior in 1863).
