We announce with sadness that Past President Joan Sampieri has passed away, following a long illness.
Born in Philadelphia and raised in New Jersey, Joan dedicated her life to advancing women's rights, civil rights, and human rights. In the 1970s, she served as President of New Jersey NOW and state coordinator for the Women's Political Caucus, and helped lead campaigns for George McGovern and Ann Klein.
In the 1990s, Joan moved to Florida to be near her grandchildren and became President and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Miami and the Greater Keys.
After moving to Michigan in 2012, Joan continued her civic involvement, serving as President of the League of Women Voters of Washtenaw County from 2019-2022, as well as on the board of the local NAACP, and as Treasurer of the Western Washtenaw Democrats.
There will be a celebration of life at the Chelsea Depot on Sunday, January 25th, from 1-5 pm and all are invited to attend.
