California state Senators are elected every four years. The terms are staggered; those from even-numbered districts elected in one statewide General Election, and those from odd-numbered districts two years later. This creates a problem when district lines are redrawn every ten years. All of the new district lines for the state Assembly and US Congress take effect at the next election – but for the state Senate, the process is staggered, with new district lines taking effect for only half of the districts immediately after redistricting, and the other lines taking effect two years later.

South Carolina lawmakers heard public testimony Wednesday over a proposal to redraw the state's U.S. House districts that scales back the sweeping changes suggested in an earlier map. “We believe that it is an obvious racial and partisan gerrymander and should be rejected,” Lynn Teague. LWVSC VP, Issues & Action, said of the new map.

You may have heard about redistricting, which sounds like an arcane bureaucratic activity that does not interest you. But redistricting will influence the partisan balance of power in the Florida Legislature and the U.S. Congress for the next decade. Redistricting will determine how influential your vote will be until 2032.

The Florida Senate has released drafts of eight Senate and eight congressional maps, which are posted on the website. The press is giving them good reviews, but all versions of the Senate maps divide Alachua County into two districts. Alachua County tends to vote differently than the surrounding counties and we are not aware of any reason to divide our county.
