“Protecting Our Rights and Freedoms: Passing the NY ERA”

Featuring Erica Smitka, LWVNY Deputy Director

On Thursday, May 30  LWV New York Deputy Director Erica Smitka spoke to League members about the Equal Rights Amendment on the ballot in New York in November.

If you weren’t able to join us in person, our senior experience intern, Sydney Boyriven, recorded the presentation. Here is her overview and the link:

This November along with voting for a Presidential candidate New York State residents will also be able to vote for an amendment to the state constitution. Currently, the New York State constitution only protects against discrimination when it comes to issues based on race and religion. The new Equal Rights Amendment would not only protect New Yorkers from discrimination based on race and religion but would also protect them from discrimination based on gender, sexuality, gender identity, age, and autonomy; protecting a much larger scale of New York citizens from systemic injustices. To learn more about New York’s ERA below you can watch a video presentation given by Erica Smitka, Deputy Director of the League of Women Voters NY. Ms. Smitka discusses the importance of the ERA and what the league is doing to ensure everyone flips the ballot in November. You can watch the presentation here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nzqIX5UINC0
