LWVNC Youth

LWVNC is excited to help local youth with an interest in voting rights, policy and politics find ways to pursue those interests. Each year, LWVNC welcomes student interns who pursue a personal passion or undertake a League project. Students wishing to learn more about current opportunities should email the League at lwvnewcastle [at] gmail.comTo read about some local youth LWVNC projects, visit our "LWV New Castle Youth in Action" page.

Students Inside Albany Conference

Every spring the League of Women Voters of New York State puts on “Students Inside Albany,” a conference for students with a strong interest in policy and politics to learn more about New York State government. The program is designed to immerse students in the process by which public policy is proposed, enacted and changed in New York State and educate them as to how they can influence and affect this process. Traditionally, the conference brings approximately 60 students from across the state to Albany to get a first-hand education about their state government. The highlight for most students is the opportunity to shadow their state representatives, with many students getting the opportunity to attend a session on the chamber floor. For more information, you can review the 2024 program brochure.

Local leagues across the state have the opportunity to select and sponsor a student to attend and represent the League at the conference. The 2024 Students Inside Albany conference will be held from May 19 to 22, 2024 in Albany. LWVNC is sending up to two students to this conference. All high school students in grades 10, 11 and 12 who reside in the Town of New Castle are eligible to apply, preference is given to high school juniors. The application is due by February 11, 2024 at 9 pm.

Other Opportunities

Running and Winning

LWV Westchester and the Association of American University Women (AAUW), with financial support from additional sponsors, hosts an annual Running & Winning one-day program in April for female high school juniors and seniors. This day-long workshop gives young women in high school the opportunity to explore public service as a career. During the workshop, students talk with local female elected officials about their experiences in politics, explore their own leadership abilities and develop teamwork skills working with other students to create and present an issue-driven mock campaign. LWV Westchester selects Running and Winning participants through local high schools. Students interested in attending Running and Winning should reach out to the chair of the social studies department at their high school to express interest. Attendees are typically selected in late February/early March.
