The League of Women Voters has long held that voters
not politicians should determine district lines.
On Tuesday, July 7, 2020 the Onondaga County Legislature voted along party lines to turn down a proposed local law for a non-partisan citizen-led independent redistricting commission. If passed the proposal would have been placed on the November ballot so that voters would have the opportunity to approve or turn down the initiative. The legislative majority who defeated the proposal say they will come up with a “fair plan”. The County Legislature’s Ways and Means Committee will address the issue at its July 17, 2020 meeting.
