Saturday, March 26, 2022 - 10:00am

Speaker:  Aaron Strong, Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies, Hamilton College

Professor Strong will be giving an overview of the CLCPA, which was signed into law in 2019, including the Draft Scoping Plan that is now open for public comment.

Addressing energy and climate change is a legislative focus of LWVNYS as well as a top area of interest by our local membership.  Our March meeting will be largely dedicated to learning about the legislative actions in New York State and how members can be involved.

This legislation was signed into law in 2019 and law created the Climate Action Council.  The Council was tasked with developing a Draft Scoping Plan that is an initial framework for how the State will reduce greenhouse gas emissions, achieve net-zero emissions, increase renewable energy usage, and ensure climate justice. This plan was released for public comment in December, 2021 and on Jan. 1, 2022 the 120-day public comment period began, to receive feedback from the public as the Council develops and releases a final scoping plan by the end of 2022.

The Plan’s summary along with the full content can be found at:  https://climate.ny.gov/Our-Climate-Act/Draft-Scoping-Plan. The full plan is over 300 pages long and has several appendices to go with it. Our meeting on March 26 will attempt to breakdown the plan into easily digestible components.

LWVNYS Concurrences

There will be a presentation on the concurrences posed by LWVNYS on the structure of the election administration in New York as well as whether incarcerated individuals should be allowed to vote.  Members will be asked to vote on agreement or disagreement with each of the presentations.
