The CA LWV Criminal Justice Committee invites you to a special pre-release screening of the film, “Racially Charged: America’s Misdemeanor Problem,” followed by a short discussion of the film. This screening is made possible through a collaboration with Brave New Films.
To attend, each person must individually RSVP to attend the film and discussion in Zoom. https://zoom.us/webinar/register/8616170542069/WN_zSAWZRAqSu64DzQNlHYoYw
Please join Zoom a few minutes early to be sure you’re there when we begin. The film and discussion will last one hour.
You might ask, why misdemeanors? These are minor infractions, like jaywalking, right? Well, this 35 minute film, inspired by Alexandra Natapoff’s book Punishment Without Crime: How Our Massive Misdemeanor System Traps the Innocent and Makes America More Unequal, exposes how these “minor infractions” coupled with our country’s history of racial injustice, have evolved into an enormous abuse of criminal justice power.
The following resources, provided by Brave New Films, will aid you in familiarizing yourself with this issue before the screening. We recommend using them in your League to talk about issues raised by the film that might be impacting your community. We will be using the questions from the discussion guide during our event.

Immediately after the discussion, California members are invited to join us for our monthly statewide Criminal Justice Committee meeting. It is expected to last from 6:30-7:00pm (Pacific). Read more about our work in California.
We hope you will join us for the screening!
Yours in League,
